Portable refrigeration unit of the COLD CHAIN  Keeping the hundreds of units going is a full time job.

The "Cold Chain" is so critical for the global immunization program and the thousands of refrigeration units have to be maintained.

Fortunately, Saika recovered fully   Saikka's mother was very happy when Saika began to walk again.

Over 50% of children who initially become paralyzed from the poliovirus recover. Saika is one of the fortunate ones and his mother is very happy.

Examining a child for possible polio  

Field workers who go out in the villages to immunize the children will come back and report a suspicious case of polio. Villages are sometimes more than hours walking distance to the closest small health center so we drive there with our 4-wheeler to examine them.

Visiting the remotest villages for case suspicious of polio 

 Typhoid is still a plague of Africa.

Typhoid remains a serious problem in Ghana and when it is combined with malnutrition the problem becomes even more serious. The father of this child died and the mother has two other children to try to feed -- and is pregnant again. Fortunately, the typhoid infection did not perferate the intestines. She was given a unit of blood and has been kept alive with IV fluids. Her little heart was pounding faster than 140 beats a minute.
